Now old desire doth in his death-bed lie, And young affection gapes to be his heir; That fair for which love groan'd for and would die, With tender Juliet match'd, is now not fair. Memorable. Eros has a reputation. Eros has several reputations. Eros invented the idea of having a reputation. Commitment and fidelity are collections of syllables that happen to other people, but Eros is not cold-hearted in the least. He remembers everyone, everyone he's been with, and each encounter is unique and meaningful to him, a collection of fond memories to which he will always add more. However, as much as he embraces and often tries to surpass the rumors, he doesn't like to cause pain. An oath of fidelity is something to be honored, and Eros does respect such oaths, though only when they are respected by those who have taken them. (People whose oaths don't matter to them are foolish enough to be fair game to any god.)

Observant. Eros can see love and desire written in mortal and immortal hearts alike. He can see the golden threads that wrap around a heart, shimmering and twining together. He knows when love is present, and when it is only the appearance of love, and no heart is invisible to him. He can't read your mind, but you'd better believe he can read everything else. Eros doesn't like false love, but he never gets angry. He gets sad, and he'll make you feel terrible about it, and you will. He is very good at it. (Do not bring up his father, ever, unless you want to find yourself pining after a tree stump.)

Conspicuous. The golden-tipped arrows of Eros are famous (or possibly infamous), but there must be a balance. Far less well-known are the arrows carried beside them, leaden-tipped to take what the golden-tipped arrow can give. The use of either is a heavy matter, and if you ask for the intercession of either gold or lead, Eros will be far more serious than might be expected as he weighs your request. He really does have the wings, and they are elegant and pearly-white and beautiful, but while he sometimes uses them to get around more quickly, Eros generally keeps them tucked away. They tend to interfere with modern clothing, they're a bitch when they're wet, and it only takes one primary feather knelt on at the wrong moment to convince anyone that wings during sex are more of a hassle than they're worth. You may see them, but it's more likely that he'll be going without. He approaches every new person openly, without hiding who or what he is, but when his influence is felt, the air will flood with the heady scent of spring blossoms and heavy midsummer sunshine and it may become difficult to think about anything other than his eyes, or his hands, or his smile. He probably will make you an offer, no matter who or what you are, but any rejection is taken in the same good-natured spirit with which it was offered. He is not spiteful, or quick to anger, but do not call him Cupid unless you want to be smacked upside the head with an arrow shaft, and you really don't want to mention Valentine's Day or Hallmark.

Powerful. Eros is the incarnation of one of the Protogenoi, the first forces born at the beginning, from whom the fabric of the universe is woven. Although almost entirely unaware of this faceless primordial side of himself, Eros has never felt a waning of power. Believing himself to be one of the younger gods, he's never been too concerned with tradition and has kept up with the times, changing and adapting, and now his efforts and diligence are paying off. In these modern days, sex and beauty and attraction are marketable commodities like never before, and although he's rarely worshiped by name anymore, he doesn't need to be. Desire hums through the world like a taut bow-string, and he is everywhere.
